Dental Crown at our Millcreek Dentist Office.
A dental crown is a fixed prosthodontic unit which is commonly referred to as a cap. The purpose of this cap, as the name suggests, is to cover a structurally compromised tooth, restore its functionality in the patient’s mouth and protect it from further damage.
Materials used in a Dental Crown
A dental crown may be fabricated using a number of materials based on the location of the tooth in the mouth, the patient’s aesthetic preferences, and budget. The three types of crowns that are widely used around the world include porcelain, metal and, porcelain fused to metal. Porcelain crowns are ideally suited for the restoration of anterior tooth, whereas the use of metal crowns is mostly restricted to the posterior dentition (molars). Porcelain fused to metal, or PFM crowns are highly versatile, possess excellent properties of both materials and therefore can be used to restore any tooth in the oral cavity without chances of fracture or compromised aesthetics. The Millcreek dentists at Four Seasons Dental are trained in all dental crown materials and procedures.
Dental Crown Procedure
Crown placement is a fairly simple, painless procedure. The tooth is first prepared by slightly cutting down margins and exposed surfaces to allow for better seating of the unit. An impression is then taken of the tooth to record fine anatomical details critical for crown design. Simultaneously, a shade is selected to match the color of the natural teeth present in the patient’s mouth. The crown is then fabricated in a laboratory using the impression and selected shade. Once the fabricated dental crown arrives out our Millcreek dental office, we are able to place it in the patients mouth during a follow up appointment. Once our Millcreek dentist has checked the dental crown for a proper fit, the crown is permanently fixed on top of the tooth using dental cements.
What are the Advantages of a Dental Crown?
Dental Crowns not only restore the functional aspect of the tooth, but also help the smile look more natural. Porcelain crowns are made to match the nature shade and texture of the teeth giving then high aesthetic value. Covering a tooth following extensive damage is essential in order to prevent complete loss of structure.
