What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal refers to the restoration of teeth that have sustained damage which cannot be repaired with the help of normal fillings. This damage generally extends beyond the crown portion, and into the pulp, thus affecting the root of the tooth.

How Long does a Root Canal take?

Depending upon the position of the tooth in the oral cavity, as well as the preference of the dentist and/or patient, root canals may be performed in multiple sittings here at our comfortable Millcreek dentist office. The aim of the procedure is to properly remove the pulp infected by bacteria, and to replace it with inert dental materials for the restoration of function, as well as structural integrity.

How is a Root Canal Performed?

During an RCT, the dentist first administers local anesthesia near the tooth to eliminate chances of pain and discomfort during the procedure. Next, the cavity is removed using a high speed bur fitted on to a mechanical hand-piece. Once the cavity has been properly removed, access into the root chambers is gained. The pulp is then removed carefully in a step called ‘Cleaning and Shaping’ performed with the help of specialized endodontic files. The canals are then irrigated and filling with a material known as Gutta Percha. The crown portion is rebuilt to match its original anatomy using strong restorative materials. Once the crown has been built, an impression of the tooth is recorded and a crown is fabricate to be fitted atop the restored tooth. The crown holds critical importance in the procedure as it protects the tooth from further damage and restores its functionality in the oral cavity.

How do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?

Common symptoms of bacterial infection that has invaded the root include sharp pain that may radiate to the ears or head, generally aggravating at night time. Swelling may also be present. It is however, in many cases, possible to avoid root canals if proper oral hygiene is maintained at home to keep bacterial infections and caries at bay. Call our dental office in Millcreek, UT today for a free consultation.
